Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements the IAEA's Major Programme 2, Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection. This Major Programme comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies.

The Joint FAO/IAEA Centre of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture assists Member States of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the IAEA in using nuclear techniques and related technologies to improve food security, alleviate poverty and promote sustainable agriculture.

Main Purpose

Under the supervision of the Section Head, the Programme Assistant provides administrative support to the organization of conferences, workshops and meetings, manages administrative arrangements in the Section in coordination with clerical staff in the Subprogramme, and provides assistance to the Section Head and other professional staff.

Functions / Key Results Expected

Meetings and logistics

  • Assist in the organization of conferences, workshops, seminars and research coordination or consultants' meetings by communicating with participants and making travel and meeting arrangements.
  • Coordinate activities and travel for Section staff members, including logistical support, travel arrangements, appointments, meetings and background material.
  • Review travel requests for accuracy and forward them to the Administrative Assistant. Prepare quarterly travel plans.

Administrative activities

  • Provide administrative support to coordinated research projects by coordinating yearly contract renewals, maintaining financial plans and updating expenditure status.
  • Support technical backstopping of in-house Technical Cooperation projects regarding procurement requests, expert requests, technical reports and evaluation of expert reports.
  • Manage overall office administration, including procurement, supplies, equipment and furniture requests, and support programme and budget preparation, annual reports and publishing requirements.
  • Coordinate office coverage and perform other related duties as required by the Section Head.

Correspondence and Documents Management

  • Proofread technical documents and publications for spelling, punctuation, grammar, syntax, completeness and adherence to style guidelines.
  • Collate information for the semi-annual newsletter and maintain Subprogramme website information.
  • Maintain and update contact and mailing lists and assist with databases operated by the Section.
  • Receive, review and screen incoming correspondence and documents, route them appropriately and maintain a follow-up system.
  • Draft correspondence, prepare meeting minutes and type reports and documents.

Qualifications, Experience and Language Skills

  • Completed secondary education.
  • Minimum of five years of general office support experience, some of which in an international environment.
  • Excellent oral and written command of English.
  • Knowledge of other official IAEA languages such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish is an asset.
  • Administrative skills testing to IAEA standard might be part of the selection process.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at EUR 59439, subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, six weeks' annual vacation, pension plan and health insurance. Ihre Inspektorinnen und Inspektoren reisen um die Welt und prüfen nach, dass Uran und Plutonium dort bleiben, wo sie hingehören: in der friedlichen Nutzung. Andere Fachleute der IAEA helfen, mit nuklearer Technik sauberes Trinkwasser in Städte zu bringen, Ernten zu sichern oder Krebs zu behandeln. Seit 1957 arbeitet die Organisation unter dem Leitgedanken „Atoms for Peace“. Der Sitz ist Wien.

Die IAEA ist eine eigenständige internationale Organisation im System der Vereinten Nationen, gegründet 1957 und heute getragen von 181 Mitgliedstaaten. Ihr Auftrag klingt schlicht und ist enorm: dafür zu sorgen, dass Kerntechnik dem Frieden dient und nicht dem Krieg. Rund 2.500 Menschen aus mehr als 100 Ländern arbeiten daran mit, die meisten am Hauptsitz im Wiener Vienna International Centre.

Die Bandbreite der Berufe ist groß. In der Abteilung Safeguards werten Analystinnen Mess- und Satellitendaten aus, während Inspektoren vor Ort in Kernanlagen das Material verifizieren. In den Laboren im niederösterreichischen Seibersdorf und in Monaco untersuchen Wissenschaftler Boden-, Wasser- und Meeresproben. Ärztinnen und Medizinphysiker bringen Strahlentherapie in Länder, in denen der Zugang zur Krebsbehandlung knapp ist. Dazu kommen Ingenieure für Reaktorsicherheit, Juristen, Übersetzer und Verwaltungsfachleute. Sechs Fachdepartments decken das ab, von den Nuklearwissenschaften über Kernenergie und nukleare Sicherheit bis zur technischen Zusammenarbeit mit ärmeren Ländern.

Wer hier anfängt, arbeitet international im Wortsinn. Neben Wien unterhält die Agentur Verbindungsbüros in New York und Genf, Regionalbüros in Toronto und Tokio und ein gemeinsam mit Triest betriebenes Forschungszentrum. Die Gehälter folgen dem einheitlichen System der Vereinten Nationen, das Kollegium kommt aus über hundert Nationen. Geleitet wird die Organisation seit Dezember 2019 von Generaldirektor Rafael Grossi. 2005 erhielt die IAEA gemeinsam mit ihrem damaligen Generaldirektor den Friedensnobelpreis.
